Each of the heroes accepted the Freedom Leagues invitations, turning up at the appointed time and place; the Freedom Hall at 14:30. Nano-man, in one of his alternate identities, arrived up early to survey the ground; under the cover of a one-man anti-violence demonstration. Noticing a vagrant loitering near the Hall entrance he attempted to recruit him to the cause but only succeeded in moving the vagrant on. When Magni arrived the vagrant re-appeared throwing himself at the god's feet. Apologising that he was not dead, he identified himself as the leader of the group that had trapped Magni on Earth ten years ago. Although Magni had dropped him to a watery death, he knew that helping the god get back home would be more useful than his demise. He explained he was still trying to find a way home but had recently acquired some new texts. Although he had not studied them in detail yet he had managed to perform a ritual to summon Magni's godly hammer, and hoped this would appease the gods wrath. He was disappointed to discover that Magni had not received it. Scuttling off to check on the ritual he promised to be in touch when he knew more. Magni joined the rest of the heroes who were entering the Freedom Hall. Shown into a small library room with leather sofas Lt.Joe Blaise, ex-marine with high-tech gaunlets, was already there. After they had made their introductions, Captain Thunder entered. He explained that the Freedom League would like to assess the group on whether they could be invited to become affiliates. This would grant them access to the league's resources and the opportunity to protect the world. He led them to a lift where the assesment would take place. Descending they found themselves in an empty room. The walls, floor and ceiling were a dull metal material and seams could be seen criss-crossing its surface. A voice over a tannoy announced the first test; a battle with robots. Sections of the wall drew back to reveal six robots who immediately start firing laser blasts at the heroes. Bloodthirst, speeding into action, transformed into a wolf and disabled the nearest robot. Hephaestus had similar success with his power assisted fists. Blue Bolt & Blaise both missed their targets. Magni struck a powerful blow but was surprised to see the robot still standing. Unable to act after a powerful laser blast, Nano-man regenerated planning his next move. The fight continued with the robots only attacking a designated target each. Magni appeared to have problems defeating his mechanical foe and Blue Bolt found himself knocked unconscious twice! In contrast Bloodthirst continued his destructive streak knocking several out of the fight. Soon all the robots were disabled and more menial robots appeared to clear the debris. The voice spoke over the tannoy again. This time it was a game with the heroes split into two groups. The aim was for a team to hold onto a ball for thirty seconds. The teams were Hephaestus, Bloodthirst and Nano-man versus Blaise, Magni and Blue Bolt. Bars, walls, ropes and ladders appeared out of the walls, floor and ceiling. The ball appeared out of a hatch in the floor. Thinking quickly Nano-man dashed forward, grabbed the ball. Using his nanobots he disassembled it. With no way for his team to win Blaise offered a truce to Nano-man; re-assemble the ball and they would both hold it. Trusting the ex-marine Nano-man agreed. The rest of the teams complied and waited the thirty seconds out. Blue Bolt amused himself by teleporting to China. Arriving, out of a neon sign, into a group of market traders he quickly returned before the shrieking public could react. Th voice over the tannoy seemed disappointed at the display of teamwork but announced the final part would be a one on one interview. The gym equipment in the room was replaced by six rooms; each with a table and two chairs. The heroes took their places and awaited their interviewer. Nano-man was interviewed by Lady Liberty, the star-spangled champion of the Spirit of Liberty. She expressed admiration of the way he conducted himself and gave no clues to what she thought of his inconclusive answer to her morale question. The super-fast Johnny Rocket sped into Blue Bolt's room. He thought the man of electricity's powers were cool. On questioning Blue Bolt putting his two knock-outs down to bad luck. Daedulus, a world-renowned scientists and inventor strode into the room in his golden suite of power armour. Although the two men had mutual appreciation for each others technical ability, he clashed with Hephaestus' mainly green suit, expressing concern over his unwillingness to speak with the police after the bank raid. Magni had a chat with Siren, a voodoo priestess. Surprised that such a god could be trapped on Earth she offered him the name of Professor Blunt. An expert in the field she thought he might be able to help. She went onto suggest that he should exercise some restraint when dealing with villains. Kiling people by throwing a van at them seemed a little exessive. The mysterious figure of Dr. Metropolis, a city spirit, spoke briefly with Bloodthirst. Making it quite clear he did not think a vampire was an appropriate league affiliate he asked one question and was not surprise by the blood-soaked reply. Finally Blaise was visited by The Raven. The dark-cloaked lady, although aloof, seemed to appreciate the ex-marine's efforts. The cocky ex-marine had the balls to ask the league member out on a date. The answer to that seemed to rely on the assessment's outcome. As the two groups of heroes congregated outside the now empty rooms' lift. Daedulus announced that he had received an alert about an asteroid heading for Earth. Exiting quickly the league thanked the heroes and went to attend to the latest world threat. Blue Bolt, able to teleport along any communication device, transported himself to a satellite to take a look. Also being able to fly faster than light he soon found the offending space object. The Freedom League soon caught up with him, aboard their spacecraft the Pegasus. Both firing at the asteroid the Blue Bolt soon saw that his blasts were dwarfed. Boarding the Pegasus he was quickly re-buffed. Back in space he noticed another space craft's firey entry into Earth's atmosphere. Following he saw that it had headed for Freedom City and he could now see a dark red field beginning to encircle the city. He joined the other heroes just as they left the Freedom Hall. Nano-man entered his nanobot swarm form, flying up to the top of the recently appear force-field. A small earthquake rocked the city and from his position he could see buildings beginning to crumble under the sustained damage. The Blue Bolt's used his speed to full advantage teleporting there but realising he had no way to prevent the buildings from toppling. Unable to communicate in his electrical form he began the slow process of teleporting one of the buildings occupants one by one. The other heroes flew on behind, Hephaestus arriving next. As he did a flying space gallion flew into view. Projecting two tractor beams the buildings were fixed into place. From the floating ship a voice boomed out: "Avast, ye scurvy Terran dogs! Yer city is now the rightful owner of the scourge of the spaceways, Cap'n Kraken. I'll venture it'll fetch a high price on the interstellar market, too. If ye value yer miserable lives, ye'll do as yer told, for if ye give me any grief, ye'll be walkin' the plank... inta hard vacuum!"
