From the notebook of Senior Special Agent Steve Anderson: Dec 19th 2007 0115hrs
You got to count your blessings sometimes. If you got your health, a roof over your head, a job you love and a family that loves you, then maybe you’re a deal closer to the Elysian Fields in this life than you realise. So much that moves in the shadows that the regular Joes and Janes know nothing about. I remember those days of truly blissful ignorance, before I knew there was a darker world behind the thin veil of mundane reality. It looks like that black curtain has been opened again but at least a thin Green line of which I am still proud to be a part is there to try and nail it closed. It was a day of truths today. First the political shit, the Potomac Two Step. I surely don’t know what happened to Schecter but he picked the wrong hot potato to juggle. The suits say he is on leave for stress, but I reckon he picked a fight with a meaner junkyard dog. That puts Martikian and the NCIS in a whole new light in my book. Marty himself is a good guy – but where there’s Navy, there’s sharks and I think we’d all do well to remember that. Then there’s Agent Chance whose Talent status just became official to me. I spoke to A and we’re agreed we got to try and bring her in but I wonder just who else knows – MJ? These new boys on the block of which our pardoned Agent Firth is one, known only as 13? I fear we may be in a world of hurt if we don’t take this carefully but I want to help her, I really do. Good to know that I have some friends around – from Chang, Pierce and Landsdell up to our new boss, AD Abigail Mercer all is clean and green. So for Locke – no sign of our missing marine still and our killer has broken his cycle as Dec 18 came and went with no bodies. Could there be a connection between that and the Hajj? If so we have until Dec 21 before our actor strikes again. Chance checked out the Egyptian connection through regular sources whilst I spoke with A for the unorthodox ones. Looks like we have an expert in hiding – one Dr Abdul Bari-Atwan, guarded by scimitar wielding goons in the Mosque of Ibn-Tulun – one of Egypt’s holiest sites. Chance recruited the aid of a Professor Marks from the University of Arizona. He set us straight on some of our history, particularly that of Nitocris, a sorcerous Queen of the Fifth Dynasty who is believed to have deposed King Niuserre and revived the cult of the Black Pharaoh who had been gone for a thousand years by then. She was apparently interred in a lost tomb ‘eaten by the desert’ after her cruel reign was brought to a sudden end. She may be gone but her regalia remains – a crown, sceptre and belt. Legend has it that if it is re-united with her body, she’ll come back to life. I used to think crap like that was the stuff of B-Movies but now I take it very seriously. Apparently, these items are also at the Ibn Tulun Mosque, so what does that make Dr Atwan? One of us, or one of them? Before this is over, I think we’ll find out. A came up with some interesting info – The Pharaoh had a cult stateside in the 1920s led by a guy named Shakti – DG caught up with him in the early 1940s so he’s no longer a player but I wonder if this Brotherhood of the Black Pharaoh ever went away. Maybe that’s what the Marines stumbled on to? Or that Queen’s tomb? We need to speak to Locke or someone more sane who was there and try and find out which means Martikian getting the military to open up to us. Baghdad for Christmas? Pass me the malt…
